Biotin, or vitamin B7, is a water-soluble vitamin that’s a part of the vitamin B complex — a group of key nutrients needed for healthy metabolic, nerve, digestive and cardiovascular functions.
Biotin acts as a coenzyme in the body that’s needed for the metabolism of fatty acids, amino acids and glucose. This means that when we eat foods that are sources of fats, proteins and carbohydrates, biotin —also called vitamin B7 — must be present in order to convert and use these macronutrients.
Our bodies then have the energy they need to carry out physical activities, for proper psychological functioning, and for growth.
Biotin benefits include helping to give us a young, attractive appearance since this vitamin plays a major part in maintaining the health of our hair, nails and skin.
In fact, it sometimes gets the nickname the “H” vitamin. This stems from the German words Haar and Haut, which mean “hair and skin.”
Some research suggests you get the most biotin benefits when it’s ingested from either food sources or supplements.
“Beneficial to Your Health”
Biotin is a critical compound in trace amount that supports human nutrient metabolism and the deficiency which is associated with many conditions, particularly hair conditions (e.g., hair loss) and nail conditions (split or cracked nails). These conditions are reversible after proper supplementation. Some studies have shown biotin can promote hair growth in both men & women whom suffer from thinning hair, and may enhance the quality of brittle nails. Additionally, biotin can also help with various skin conditions, such as seborrheic dermatitis (cradle cap) and eczema.
Some studies have indicated that a low biotin level during pregnancy may increase the risk of birth defects due to potential fat metabolism alteration, which can cause fetal malformations. In addition, a lowered level of biotin may delay the growth of the embryonic palate (roof of the mouth), leading to cleft palate development. Therefore keeping a normal level of biotin during pregnancy can minimize the fore-mentioned risks. Nevertheless, always remember to ask your doctor before taking supplements during pregnancy and/or breastfeeding.
You may have heard of certain marketed supplements claiming to help people lower blood sugar levels and in return, have felt fed up with it, but with biotin it's not simply another ungrounded selling point. Lowered biotin levels have been observed in people with type 2 diabetes, compared to healthy individuals in similar studies, and supplementation of biotin in type 2 diabetes patients can help reduce blood sugar levels.
Biotin benefits the health of the nervous system because of its role in nerve signaling and neurotransmitter activity. B vitamins together influence memory function and defend against age-related cognitive impairment, such as neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Because of their role in synthesizing hormones that are related to a mood regulation, B vitamins like vitamin B7 help to keep up a positive mindset, boost energy and increase concentration.
